GoPro has launched a pilot programmed for its 5.2K spherical camera, the GoPro Fusion.

The company hopes that the Fusion will be used for both fully immersive VR content as well as conventional non-VR video and photos.

As part of the pilot, applications have been opened for professional content creators to participate in the programme during summer 2017.

In an introduction to the pilot on the company’s website, senior product manager of Spherical Solutions, Jess Foley said:

“Imagine never having to worry about framing your subject…ever. Well, thanks to Fusion, our users will be able to record their moments in all directions and then go back and choose the composition they want.”

This motion picture capture technique is referred to as OverCapture or reframing. Foley likens it to “having a camera team with you when you shoot capturing your primary and b-roll footage”.

‘Versatile spherical capture’

GoPro fusion captures 5.2K30 video as well as fully spherical videos.

This resolution enables the new OverCapture feature that allows the production of non-VR video and HD photos from the spherically captured images.

“Fusion is the ability to capture every angle simultaneously as though you had six GoPro cameras fused into one.,” Nicolas Woodman, GoPro founder and CEO, said.

“Whether filming for VR or traditional fixed-perspective content, Fusion represents the state-of-the-art in versatile spherical capture.”

GoPro currently plan to have a limited commercial release for Fusion by the end of 2017.

This isn’t the first time that GoPro has gotten into the realm of VR, most of us who have been eagerly awaiting a way to capture VR remember the GoPro 360 Array. This was a camera rig consisting of 16 camera holsters side by side and placed in them was your favorite kind of GoPro. This was a good idea for the time, and a quick fix for GoPro to get into the game. However it was cumbersome and expensive with a sticker price way over $5000.00 and it moved away from the companies idea to make cameras more personal, smaller and almost autonomous. This would obviously need a second person to shoot. It was only a matter of time when GoPro moved away from the peripheral  and into the actual VR equipment game. GoPro 360 VR There is no set price on the GoPro Fusion yet as it is in pilot mode and if you fill out the application for the GoPro Fusion, I don’t know it looks like you may be one of the first to use this bad boy.
